The Rainforest Alliance is a non-governmental organization (NGO) which work for conservation of biodiversity and ensures sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behaviour. Rainforest Alliance was established in 1987 in response to the environmental emergency of uncontrolled deforestation.
The Rainforest Alliance protects biodiversity through landscape management which helps conserve standing forests, rejuvenate degraded land, and protect rivers and streams. Tropical rainforests are forests with tall trees, warm climates, and lots of rain. In some rainforests it rains more than one inch nearly every day of the year!
The Rainforest Alliance Certification is an exhaustive process that promotes and guarantees improvements in agriculture and forestry. Rainforest Alliance certification is based on 10 standards decided by the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN). These standards include ecosystem conservation, wildlife protection, and fair treatment and good working conditions for workers. The Rainforest Alliance Certified Seal is awarded to farms and forestlands that meet the standards of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN).
